Iran joins UN agencies despite some objection

Iran has become a member of the NG Agencies Commission after an eight-year lapse. Iran’s membership in the NGOs Commission has been challenged by the U.S.
Zamaneh – Iran has gained membership in five United Nations agencies. The United Nations Economic and Social Council says Iran is now a member of five agencies of the United Nations, including the Coordination and Planning Committee, the Women’s Rights Commission, the Population and Development Commission and the Science and Technology for Development Commission.
Iran has also become a member of the Non-governmental Agencies Commission after an eight-year lapse.
Iran’s membership in the NGOs Commission has been challenged by the U.S. and Human Rights Watch, who have cited Iran’s human rights record as the reason for their opposition.
